Lactoferrin, which is part of milk proteins (lacto + ferrrin = milk + iron), has antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects. It is an iron-binding glycoprotein (approx. 77 kDa), which helps balance iron levels in the body. Iron deficiency manifested by excessive fatigue, weakness, dizziness and headaches, palpitations, as well as excessive hair loss and deterioration of the skin and nails significantly worsens the comfort of life. Supplementation with lactoferrin in this case may be beneficial in supporting the absorption and supplementation of iron deficiencies. Excess iron can also be harmful leading to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and lactoferrin, thanks to its ability to strongly and reversible binding of iron ions, supports the body in maintaining homeostasis of this element. This glycoprotein supports the immune system in dealing with chronic inflammatory processes leading to iron deficiency. In a study in long-distance runners who supplemented with lactoferrin in combination with iron for 8 weeks, beneficial changes in blood counts and lactate levels were noted compared to participants who were given iron alone. This suggests a positive effect of lactoferrin on iron levels and exercise tolerance in physically active people. In addition, lactoferrin can be successfully used by pregnant women not only in supporting iron absorption, but also in supporting immune function due to its proven safety.
