L-ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, is an elementary component of our diet. It is not produced by the human body, therefore it must be supplied with food, hence it is called a vitamin. It is a substance in powder form – soluble in water and alcohol, with a slightly sour taste. Its excess is quickly excreted in the urine.

The name acidum ascorbicum derives from the Latin scorbutus (scurvy, rot), because at the end of the eighteenth century the impact of vitamin C deficiency on the development of rot, which was suffered en masse by crew members of ships embarking on months of sea expeditions, was discovered. They struggled with gingivitis, increased fatigue, difficult to heal wounds. For centuries, populations without access to fresh fruit and vegetables have also suffered from the same condition.
