Why are chelated forms better absorbed?

All organic forms of magnesium dissolve well in water, but not all have the same ability to cross cell membranes. The chemical form therefore has a key impact on the effectiveness of the supplement.

Magnesium (Mg2+) in the form of chelates (glycinate and taurate) is better tolerated by the body, does not have a laxative effect and its release is more stable. Binding of magnesium with amino acids – glycine and taurine in the form of chelates (from the Greek word chele = ‘kleszcze’ or ‘slices’ crab) has a positive effect on its bioavailability and distribution to tissues. In the chelated state, magnesium ion is more durable and neutral – especially for the intestines: it does not cause loose stools and diarrhea (which unfortunately often happens in supplementation of this element). Chelated magnesium does not increase osmotic pressure in the gut to the same extent as free magnesium cations, which with water form large and more difficult to penetrate through cell membranes molecules (hydrates) [5, 6].
