Creatine is a substance naturally occurring in the body, especially in muscles, heart and brain. It is formed in the liver, kidneys and pancreas in a multi-stage process with three amino acids: glycine, arginine and methionine. Inside the cells, the phosphate group is added to creatine by the creatine kinase enzyme to form phosphocreatine. Phosphocreatine can then transfer its phosphate group to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to regenerate the cell’s energy currency, adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This process plays an important role in muscles and is especially important when a large amount of energy is suddenly needed.
