Vitamin E, called the "vitamin of youth", is involved in many important processes in the human body. It is a group of compounds called tocopherols (toferrols and tocotrienols with similar physiological activity). Together with vitamins A, D and K, they belong to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. This means that they are stored in the body (rather than excreted in the urine or later, like water-soluble vitamins), mainly in adipose tissue and adrenal glands. Vitamin E is synthesized exclusively by plants, although it can also be found in some animal products.

The richest natural source of vitamin E are seeds, nuts and fats (oils) obtained from them: sunflower, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, almond seeds, walnuts, wheat germ, grape seeds. The oil form is therefore the best form of administration of this vitamin both with diet and in dietary supplements. In addition, the absorption of the "vitamin of youth" by the body is supported by other vitamins, such as vitamin A, a complex of B vitamins, vitamin C, manganese, selenium, phosphorus and essential fatty acids (EFAs).

It is worth knowing that there are various chemical forms of vitamin E available on the market:

• D-alpha-tocopherol,
• DL-alpha-tocopherol,
• D-alpha-tocopheryl acetate,
• DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate,
• D-alpha-tocopheryl amber

Compounds starting with DL are synthetic (artificial) forms of vitamin E obtained in a chemical way.

The compounds starting with D come from natural sources.

The natural form of vitamin E has been found to be stronger than the synthetic form. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) have confirmed that the equivalent of 1 gram of natural vitamin E is 1,36 grams of synthetic vitamin. However, the latest research in this area shows that the advantage of absorption of natural vitamin over synthetic can be up to twice.

Tocopherols (vitamin E) are quite resistant to high temperature but degrade during freezing, under conditions of oxygen access and also when exposed to sunlight, so it is worth e.g. Store oils and nuts in a cabinet, in a closed package.

Vitamin E is one of the strongest antioxidants, neutralizes free radicals that destroy cell DNA. It prevents the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (POUF – Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids) present both in cell membranes and in the blood. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, it delays the aging process of the skin – hence the name “vitamin of youth”. Vitamin E, in addition to its antioxidant properties, also performs other functions in the body, e.g. it participates in the regulation of protein kinase C activity, an enzyme involved in the transmission of signals within cells.

Only a well-balanced diet fully meets the needs of the body for vitamin E. Unfortunately, in times of ubiquitous highly processed food, excessive professional activity, as well as stressful situations that often meet us, it is difficult to provide the body with the necessary amounts of this valuable vitamin. According to experts, the daily requirement for vitamin E varies and depends on m.in. from age, gender and physiological condition.

The recommended portion for consumption during the day necessary to obtain a beneficial effect:

1 capsule every 2 days, during a meal.
