Omega 3 triglycerides or esters?

The difference between triglycerides and omega esters is due to their chemical structure and bioavailability, which affects the way the body absorbs and uses them.

Choosing the right form of omega-3 supplementation (TG or EE) depends on individual needs, price and availability of raw material. Triglycerides are a natural form, better absorbed with high bioavailability, but more expensive and less available on the market. Ethyl esters are a processed form (more available and popular on the market), willingly used due to the possibility of obtaining a high concentration of omega-3 acids.

Triglycerides (TG)

Triglycerides are compounds in which three fatty acid molecules (e.g. omega-3s are attached to one glycerol molecule. They occur naturally in most vegetable and animal fats and oils (e.g. in fish). Triglycerides are well recognized by digestive enzymes (lipases), so their absorption by the body is very effective. After digestion, fatty acids are released from glycerol, which allows them to be used as an energy source or building material.

What are omega-3 fatty acids?

OMEGA-3 acids are a common name for a group of compounds belonging to essential fatty acids (EFAs).

ESSENTIAL – because unlike saturated fatty acids, the body is not

able to produce them themselves, and they are needed at many levels of its functioning. Therefore, they must be supplied in adequate quantities in food.

UNSATURATED – which means that in the molecules of these acids there is at least one double bond between carbon atoms in the carbon chain. The ‘3’ suffix, on the other hand, means that the last such double bond is located at the third carbon atom from the end of the chain.

OMEGA-3 or OMEGA-6?

Providing both omega-3 and omega-6 acids is very important for the proper functioning of the body, however, due to the fact that in the human body the transformations of fatty acids from the n-3 (omega 3) and n-6 (omega 6) family depend on the same enzymes, it is important to maintain their proper ratio in the diet. Excessive predominance in the diet of linoleic acid (a precursor of the n-6 family) inhibits the synthesis of EPA and DHA (family n-3) and exacerbates their secondary deficiency. The optimal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is 1:4-5.
