Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a shrub from the nightshade family originating from India and cultivated there on a large scale. Ashwagandha root, as in the case of ginseng, has an active effect. Therefore, the plant is sometimes also called Indian ginseng. The name aswagandha means “horse smell” and comes from the characteristic horse scent characterizing the fresh root of the plant. Ashwagandha extract is a source of bioactive compounds called vitanolids exhibiting adaptogenic effects, one of the most active compounds of this group of compounds is Vitaferin A. In addition, ashwagandha also contains significant amounts of alkaloids.

How does ashwagandha work?

Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen, a group of plant-derived substances that increase resistance to stress and maintain the body's proper balance. Like other adaptogens, it increases the body's resistance to stressors, supporting the nervous and immune systems. In addition to its adaptogenic properties, ashwagandha has a positive effect on the body in many areas of its functioning, including the mind – improving mental well-being and mental activity, as well as the circulatory and respiratory systems. Besides its positive impact on mental condition, it also adds vitality, positively affecting increased physical endurance and sexual function. Why only root?

Due to the much lower price of leaves, which can account for up to 1/15 of the price of roots, some manufacturers use their admixtures for the extracts they produce. The original use of leaves, however, was for topical treatments on the skin in conditions such as burns or boils, rather than consumption.
