Ashwagandha was already used hundreds of years ago in the Old Indian tradition, and now it is becoming more and more popular. This is due to the fact that both contemporary literature and traditional Ayurvedic writings report many potential properties of the herb Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, also referred to as Indian ginseng). Ashwagandha belongs to a family of herbs known as “adaptogens”. The term “adaptogen” refers to an herb containing phytonutrients that affect metabolism when the body is disturbed by physical or mental stress. According to the authors of the 2015 publication (which appeared in the Journal of the International of Sports Nutrition), these ingredients help the body adapt by normalizing the function of the system, developing resistance to such stress in the future and raising the functioning of the body to a higher level of fitness.
