Not every insulin has the same concentration — and confusing a syringe matched to one concentration with insulin of a different concentration is one of the more serious mistakes a patient or caregiver can make during dosing. The U-40 scale Embecta Micro-Fine syringe is designed specifically for insulins with a concentration of 40 units per milliliter — other than the more popular U-100 scale, and therefore requiring separate, dedicated equipment.

Why does the brand matter?

Why does the U-40 scale require a separate syringe?

Insulin U-40 contains 40 units of the active substance in 1 ml of solution, which is 2,5 times less concentrated than the more popular insulin U-100. Using the U-100 syringe to administer U-40 insulin (or vice versa) leads to a serious dosing error because the scales of both syringes are calibrated to a different concentration. The U-40 syringe eliminates this risk by giving you a scale exactly that matches the concentration of insulin used.

Needle designed for minimal pain

The 30G needle with a diameter of 0,30 mm is thinner than the standard 29G needle used in U-100 syringes, which translates into an even more delicate injection. The shorter length of 8 mm combined with a precision-cut, three-plane blade and a special coating that facilitates skin puncture minimizes discomfort with each injection.

Who is this size for?

The U-40 scale is used primarily in veterinary medicine – in the treatment of diabetes in animals (dogs and cats) with insulins such as Vetsulin or ProZinc, where the concentration of 40 units/ml is the therapeutic standard. The shorter 8 mm needle also works well with less subcutaneous tissue, typical of animals or slimmer patients. Always verify that the syringe is compatible with the concentration of insulin used before use — never combine the U-40 syringe with the U-100 insulin.
