L-glutamine is an amino acid that is an amide of glutamic acid. It is one of the three most abundant amino acids in the blood and brain. It comes in the form of two enantiomers. Naturally occurring is L-glutamine, which belongs to the group of 20 basic amino acids, which are part of many plant and animal proteins. Glutamine is an endogenous amino acid, hence it does not have to be supplied to the body with food. However, there are some physiological states during which the demand for it increases and then its supplementation is necessary (1,2).

Functions of L-glutamine:

Glutamine plays an important role in nitrogen metabolism – it helps to remove unnecessary ammonia from the body, created by protein metabolism. Thanks to this, it has a positive effect on athletes practicing exercise sports, because it cleanses the body of harmful metabolic products (1). In addition, it has a significant role in muscle formation processes. Glutamine is the main source of energy for the small intestine and is a necessary component for maintaining proper bowel function. Many people struggle with a disease known as leaky bowel syndrome, which contributes to various autoimmune diseases. It has been proven that glutamine can prevent this condition. Also thanks to the fact that it is an element of the lining of the digestive system, it accelerates the healing of stomach or duodenal ulcers (4,6). Glutamine, as the most abundant amino acid in skeletal muscle, is an essential component for muscle recovery that can be destroyed as a result of certain diseases (5). Due to the fact that L-glutamine penetrates the blood-brain barrier and is converted into glutamic acid, it is an energy source for the brain. Thanks to this, it improves memory and concentration (3). Glutamine also plays a significant role in the work of the immune system, as it participates in the formation of certain blood proteins that stimulate the immune system (4).

L-glutamine:

• supports the work of the digestive system, being a nutrient and repair ingredient for the intestines,
• promotes muscle growth,
• is a neurotransmitter that supports brain function, increases concentration,
• affects the improvement of performance during endurance exercises,
• improves metabolism,
• regulates blood sugar levels.

 

RSI L-glutamine additionally contains the ingredient L-lisyne in the amount of 2%.

In synergy with L-glutamine, L-lysine is responsible for:

• participates in the synthesis of collagen and elastin,
• participates in the capture and storage of calcium,
• is a precursor of carnitine biosynthesis,
• participates in carbohydrate metabolism, hormone metabolism, enzyme activation and energy production,
• is involved in the production of antibodies,
• increases the bioavailability of iron,
• is responsible for the proper metabolism of fats
