RWF and FWF – what is the difference?

Your child is just growing out of their first car seat, so you are combing the internet in search of a successor? Sooner or later you will come across the terms “RWF and FWF.”

RWF seat – what does it mean?

The RWF is a rear-facing car seat (RWF). This way of transporting children is well known to all parents – infant car seats are always installed in this way, because the regulations require it. Only by buying a model from subsequent growth and weight groups, we can choose whether we decide on RWF or front-mounted car seat (FWF – Front Way Facing).

in Poland FWF models are definitely more widespread. When the toddler grows out of the first car seat and it comes time for a change, most parents choose the one mounted in front, without considering any other possibility at all. This is a big mistake – rear-facing seats are up to 5 times safer for children.

Why drive in the back seat?

Why is driving in a rear-facing car seat safer for your child? To fully understand this, we need to realize how different the child’s body is from that of an adult. The most important difference lies in the proportion of the head in relation to the rest of the torso.

In an adult, the head is okay. 6% of the total body weight. In a few months old toddler – up to 25%. A toddler who is 10 kg must therefore carry a weight exceeding 2 kg on his neck. Do you think that's not much? Let’s calculate how much our heads would weigh if this proportion did not decrease with age. For a 60-kilogram woman it would be 15 kg, and for an 80-kilogram man – 20. Can you imagine carrying a bag of potatoes weighing 20 kilograms on your shoulders? That's right!

This difference is extremely important in the context of choosing a car seat. The overloads that affect car passengers at the time of a frontal collision (and these statistically happen most often) are unimaginably large. 2 things protect against their dangerous effects of adults riding in the front seats. Firstly, the airbag, secondly – a strong spine and neck muscles that support the head. The child sitting in the back does not have a life-saving pillow or such a strong spine – in several months old toddler circles consist of delicate, prone to stretching cartilage.

When such a toddler sits in an FWF car seat, during a violent road incident, his head moves forward with a force so large that it threatens to tear the ligaments of the spine and even damage the spinal cord. The baby’s neck muscles are simply too weak to hold the head, which “shoots” like a bullet, not cushioned by a decomposing airbag. The consequences of this can be tragic.

Forces that act on a small passenger in the event of an accident or collision decompose completely differently when the child travels in a rear-facing seat. The overloads that act on the head and spine of the toddler are then lower, because they are partially cushioned by the headrest and backrest of the seat.

Parents, you have to remember that!

Children should travel in rear-facing car seats for as long as possible and at least up to 4. year of age. This is the moment when their bodies undergo the most significant transformation. The head ceases to be such a large percentage of the entire weight of the toddler, and the muscles of the spine clearly strengthen. From that moment on, travel in the FWF seat is safe for the child.

The most common driving myths in the RWF

If driving backwards is 5 times safer for children, why are there still so few toddlers traveling this way? We see the reasons for this state of affairs firstly in the ignorance of many parents, and secondly – in the harmful myths that circulate widely. It has been said that a child who grows out of the first car seat is already “adult” enough that he can (or even should! ) start driving ahead. Conscious parents, transporting their children in RWF models up to 4. whether 5. A year old, they often encounter mock-up questions like “So big and still riding backwards?! ”.

Proponents of driving ahead, arguing their choice, give many arguments:

• Because when a child drives backwards, he shrinks his legs, which surely numb him and hurt him,
• because when driving backwards, the toddler can not see anything through the window and begins to get bored,
• because after switching from a carrier to an FWF car seat, the child finally stopped crying on the go, so this way of driving is certainly more comfortable for him,
• because the parents sitting in front can't control what the child does if he's turned backwards,
• because the RWF seats are much larger and do not fit in a normal car,
• Because the child wants to ride ahead.

We debunk excuses!

Each of these arguments can easily be refuted. The alleged “shrinkable aching feet” in the RWF car seat is a problem created by parents. The kids are not complaining about this position. The legs can be arranged in many ways – crossing them in Turkish, unfolding on both sides of the seat or resting on the back of the sofa. While driving, the little ones see through the window almost exactly what they would see if they were sitting in front. In addition, in many car models, they can observe the surroundings through the rear window.

Too much generalization is also the statement that traveling in the RWF car seat is uncomfortable for children. Parents often draw such a conclusion, because it happens that after switching to the FWF model, the little ones stop crying on the go. Yes, it is possible, but it is not about the direction of travel, but about the position of the child. In the carrier seat, the child lies more than he sits, and in addition is quite low. This position makes him not see much. In the car seat from the next growth and weight category, however, he can comfortably observe what is happening outside the window, and it is so interesting for him that he does not whine and does not cry.

Further arguments are also easy to refute. Parents can comfortably observe what the toddler traveling backwards is doing – all they have to do is mount a special mirror on the headrest of the sofa. As for the size of the RWF seats, it is true that they take up a little more space in the car than the FWF seats, because it forces their design. Among them, however, you can find smaller and larger models – the variety of options makes it easy to choose a RWF seat even for a small car.

And the last argument is also an excuse – because the child wants to ride ahead. The one-year-old child, who has traveled backwards so far, does not know what it is like to “ride ahead”. Transferring a toddler to the FWF car seat is at this stage a decision only for parents.

Test Plus car seats – what is it?

Many parents when looking for a child seat pay attention to whether selected models have an ADAC test. Meanwhile, a more authoritative, although definitely less known, safety test of car seats is Test Plus. What is it and why should you trust its results?

Test Plus – What is it?

Test Plus is a child seat safety test organized by Swedish automotive institutes: VTI and NFT. It is subject to models from two weight categories: up to 18 and up to 25 kg. Test Plus is sometimes called the “gold standard” because it is so rigorous that only the best RWF seats pass it, i.e. rear-facing. Models that meet its standards are marked with a characteristic gold sticker.

Participation in Test Plus is voluntary – each manufacturer can submit such a desire and test their car seat according to the test procedures (as opposed to the ADAC test, whose organizers choose the models to test themselves). However, relatively few brands decide on this – the reason is precisely the maximum standards that the seat must meet in order to obtain the Test Plus certificate.

What does Test Plus check for car seats?

During Test Plus, only 1 parameter is tested: the tensile force that acts on the head and neck of the child during a frontal collision at a speed of 56,5 km/h. However, speed is not the most important factor here – in the ADAC test, the test car accelerates to 72 km/h, and it is Test Plus that stands out for its more demanding standards. Another parameter is more important: the braking distance. In the Swedish test, it is shorter and more complex (it consists of several so-called. pickes), which makes it incomparably more difficult to pass. The shorter the stopping distance, the greater the stretching forces act on the child's head and neck.

Why only the best RWF seats pass Test Plus?

Why is it dangerous? If too much force acts on the head of a toddler during an accident or other road incident, the cervical vertebrae of his spine may stretch or even break, which threatens permanent disability. The younger the child is, the greater the risk of serious injury.

The reason is anatomy – the weight of the baby’s head is as much as 25% of his body weight. For a 6-year-old, this is okay. 15%, and in an adult – only 6%. In addition, the spine of tiny children is not yet fully developed and its delicate cartilage simply can not withstand such large overloads. If during a sudden braking or collision the child is sitting in a forward-facing seat (FWF), his head may be unwittingly fired forward. There is no support and the neck is too weak to hold.

That’s why Test Plus only goes through the best rear-facing seats. Only they can effectively minimize the forces that act on the child during a sudden traffic incident. No FWF model has a chance to provide this – because the laws of physics do not allow it.

The Swedish test organizers also developed a special scale of injuries. If the seat effectively minimizes the pressure forces below the indicated values (122 kg for a 3-year-old and 164 kg for a 6-year-old), it is likely that the toddler after the accident will not have to be hospitalized longer than necessary to collect basic tests. Above this limit, the risk of permanent injuries and longer hospital stays increases dramatically.

Swedish driving safety standard

The fact that Test Plus originated in Sweden is no accident. Swedes have always attached great importance to safety and driving culture. The first safety test of car seats was developed in 1973, 8 years before the European ECE approval was created. It was called Test T-Standard and, like Plus Test, it checked how the seats minimized the tensile forces described above. In 2008, its procedures were changed to adapt them to EU requirements, and then it was renamed the Plus Test. The current test methodology is the result of cooperation between specialists from automotive institutes VTI and NFT, insurance company Folksam, Swedish Institute of Standards (SIS) and Volvo brand safety experts.

You drive backwards – you drive safer

In Sweden, it is also strongly promoted to transport children rear-facing for as long as possible – or at least up to 4. year of age. The use of RWF models was recommended 50 years ago when the T-Standard Test was launched, and this way of traveling with the smallest toddlers has become the only possible option for Swedes. Seeing a 3-year-old driving backwards is not unusual.

Meanwhile, most Polish parents exaggerate their children ahead already when they grow out of the first car seat (the so-called. “carriers”) – so at least a dozen months too early! Transporting a 2- or 3-year-old in the back is still unfortunately met with surprise lined with mockery.
