Oils can be divided into three main types, according to the oil base.

• mineral – formed in the process of refining crude oil; they are characterized by much higher viscosity compared to synthetic and are not uniform; they can contain sulphur or hydrocarbons and form nagars in the engine. They thicken very much at low temperatures.
• synthetic – produced on the basis of mineral oils with the addition of synthetic; they are an intermediate product. Different manufacturers use different proportions, so the same type of oil from another manufacturer may have slightly different properties.

Quality classification of API oils

• S – oils for gasoline engines. (Categories A -> P)
• C – diesel engine oils. (Categories A -> K)
• F – oils for selected diesel units (high-speed, 4-stroke).

The full designation of engine oils according to the API consists of two letters (although diesel oils may also have a number at the end). The further the number (after S,C or F), the higher the quality of engine oil. Accordingly, full records may be as follows: SM, SL, SJ or CI-4, CH-4. CG-4.

ACEA classification - European Association of Vehicle Manufacturers

• A – petrol engine oils (Class 1-5)
• B – diesel engine oils (Class 1-5)
• C – low ash oils (Low SAPS) for petrol engines with catalytic systems and diesels with DPF filters (Class 1-4)
• E – diesel engine oils for trucks (Class 1-9)

The higher the number, the better the oil class (e.g. A5/B4), you should not pour oil of a lower class than recommended by the engine manufacturer.

Classification of viscosity of engine oils

• 0W means that the oil has an optimal viscosity/density even at a temperature of -35°C
• 5W to -30°C
• 10W to -25°C
• 15W to -20°C
• 20W to -15°C
• 25W to -10°C

The second number is the maximum ambient temperature at which the oil has its factory properties (it does not become too rare)

So, for example, 15W40 oil is a practically year-round oil that retains its properties at temperatures of -20 to 40°C
