Calcined soda – properties and use at home

Calcinated soda, also known as sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃), is a white, odorless powder with a strongly alkaline reaction. It is a chemical compound belonging to inorganic salts, often confused with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), although its effect is much stronger. It occurs naturally, but can also be produced synthetically.

Properties of soda ash:

• Strongly alkaline – pH of the solution is approx. 11, which makes it effectively dissolves fats and neutralizes acids.
• Water-soluble – dissolves well in warm water to form a cleaning solution.
• Odorless and non-toxic (in proper use) – although skin and eye contact should be avoided, it does not contain toxic fumes.
• Biodegradable – safe for the environment, as long as it is not used in excess.

Application of soda ash at home – especially for cleaning:

1. Cleaning strong dirt and grease

   Perfect for removing dried grease from cookers, ovens, hoods or pots.

   Just mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of baking soda with hot water and apply to a soiled surface, leave for a while, and then wipe off.

2. Tube clearing

   Can be used together with hot water or in combination with vinegar to dissolve grease and dirt deposits in pipes.

3. Washing and stain removal

   Increases the effectiveness of the detergent – you can add 1 to 2 washing spoons (especially to white).

   Helps remove tough stains (e.g. from fat, sweat, tea).

4. Cleaning the bathroom

   Perfectly removes limescale deposits, soap, dirt and mold from grout, tiles or toilet bowl.

5. Disinfection and neutralization of odors

   Soda has antibacterial properties and helps neutralize unpleasant odors, e.g. in trash cans or refrigerators (although baking soda is more often used in the refrigerator, because it is milder).

   6. Cleaning grills and ovens

Apply soda ash to dirty elements, moisten them with water and leave for a few hours or overnight. Then wipe the cleaned surface and rinse with water.

7. Cleaning and descaling:

Soda ash can be used to clean various surfaces such as tiles, grout, fittings, sinks, ovens, grills or dishwashers. It acts as a natural descaler.

⚠ Precautions:

• Protective gloves should be used as it may irritate the skin.
• Avoid contact with eyes and do not inhale dust.
• Do not apply to aluminum surfaces – it can damage them.
• Store in a dry place, out of reach of children.
