Excessive hardness of water is the cause of the formation of boiler stone (and thus reduce the efficiency of the heating process in devices operating on the principle of heat exchange) and increase the consumption of washing and washing agents. In accordance with Polish standards (Journal of Laws No. 2010 No. 72 item. 466) the general hardness of drinking water should be within 60-500 mg CaCO3/l (3,4-28°dH). Water softening involves removing hardness by ion exchange. During the flow of water through the ion exchange resin, the hardness-causing calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions are exchanged for sodium (Na+) ions. When the ionic capacity is exhausted, it is regenerated with a solution of table salt (NaCl). The frequency of regeneration depends on the hardness and amount of water treated.
