Holybro Pixhawk RPi CM4 Baseboard

The Holybro Pixhawk RPi CM4 Baseboard allows you to integrate a Pixhawk flight controller module with a Raspberry Pi Compute Module. It's designed for advanced UAV platforms, mobile robots, and autonomous systems that require simultaneous autopilot and companion computer functionality.

This board is compatible with Pixhawk 5X and Pixhawk 6X flight controllers and devices using the Pixhawk Bus standard. It also supports Raspberry Pi CM4 and CM5 modules. The version offered does not include the PM03D power module, flight controller, or Raspberry Pi Compute Module.

Who is this baseboard for?

  • For builders creating drones and autonomous robots with a Pixhawk controller and a companion computer.
  • For projects requiring support for additional algorithms, image analysis, telemetry, or mission planning.
  • For users of Pixhawk 5X or Pixhawk 6X who want to integrate their autopilot with a Raspberry Pi CM4 or CM5.
  • For projects using GPS, CAN, telemetry, Ethernet, USB, I2C, SPI, and PWM ports.
  • For users developing systems based on PX4 or ArduPilot.

Who is this baseboard NOT for?

  • For those expecting a complete, ready-to-install flight controller – the Pixhawk module is not included.
  • For those expecting an onboard computer – a Raspberry Pi CM4 or CM5 must be purchased separately.
  • For those expecting a power module – the PM03D is not included in this version.
  • For simple FPV builds that don't require a companion computer or advanced autopilot interfaces.

Key Features

  • Pixhawk and Raspberry Pi Integration: Combines the functionality of an autopilot with the additional computing power of a companion computer.
  • Compatible with Pixhawk 5X and Pixhawk 6X: Allows the use of modular flight controllers that adhere to the Pixhawk Bus standard.
  • Supports Raspberry Pi CM4 and CM5: Provides the flexibility to choose the right computer module for your application.
  • Internal TELEM2 Connection: Reduces the number of wires needed for communication between the flight controller and Raspberry Pi.
  • Ethernet Communication Capability: Enables the transfer of larger data volumes between the autopilot and companion computer.
  • Three Telemetry Ports: Allows connection of modems, communication devices, and additional onboard systems.
  • Two GPS Ports and Two CAN Ports: Facilitates expansion with navigation modules, RTK, and DroneCAN devices.
  • MAIN and AUX PWM Outputs: Offers a total of two sets of 8 PWM channels.
  • CSI Camera Port and Micro HDMI Output: Expands the capabilities of the Raspberry Pi module.
  • USB-C Host and Device Ports: Allow for Raspberry Pi programming and connection of additional USB devices.

Flight Controller and Raspberry Pi Integration

The flight controller module is internally connected to the Raspberry Pi via the TELEM2 interface. This connection uses TX, RX, CTS, and RTS lines, enabling serial communication with hardware flow control.

This internal connection eliminates the need for an extra UART cable between the modules, simplifying installation in tight spaces and reducing wiring errors.

The flight controller and Raspberry Pi can also communicate via Ethernet. This connection is useful for systems transmitting extensive telemetry, camera data, image analysis results, or other information requiring higher bandwidth.

Raspberry Pi CM4 and CM5 Support

The board supports Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 and Compute Module 5. For CM4, the manufacturer recommends a version with wireless connectivity, at least 4 GB of RAM, and a minimum of 16 GB eMMC storage.

The USB-C Device port is used for powering the module during programming and for flashing the system image. The maximum input voltage for this port is 5 V.

The Raspberry Pi CM5 has higher power requirements than the CM4. If the computer's USB port does not provide sufficient power during programming, the manufacturer recommends using an active USB hub.

Raspberry Pi Interfaces

  • 1 x USB-C Device port for module power and programming
  • 2 x USB-C Host ports
  • USB-C Host port current limit: 1 A per port
  • 1 x Micro HDMI output
  • 1 x CSI camera port
  • 1 x 5 V fan port
  • 1 x Raspberry Pi Ethernet port

Flight Controller Ports

The baseboard provides a set of interfaces designed for flight controllers compatible with the Pixhawk Bus standard. Most connectors use the JST-GH standard with a 1.25 mm pitch.

Flight Controller Power

  • POWER1 - Main power port and digital power parameter measurement
  • POWER2 - Backup power port and digital power parameter measurement
  • POWER1 and POWER2 connectors - CLIK-Mate with 2.00 mm pitch

The offered version does not include a power module. A suitable module should be selected separately for the flight controller and the vehicle's power system.

Telemetry and Communication

  • TELEM1
  • TELEM2
  • TELEM3
  • UART4 with I2C bus
  • Separate I2C port
  • SPI port
  • Flight controller USB port
  • Flight controller Ethernet port

Navigation and CAN Bus

  • GPS1 with UART, I2C lines, safety button, LED, and buzzer
  • GPS2 with UART and I2C lines
  • CAN1
  • CAN2

The two CAN ports allow connection of compatible devices using the CAN or DroneCAN bus. These can include GPS modules, sensors, power modules, and telemetry devices.

RC Receivers and Control Signals

  • DSM/Spektrum Port
  • RC Input supporting SBUS and PPM
  • RSSI Port
  • 8 x FMU PWM OUT AUX outputs
  • 8 x I/O PWM OUT MAIN outputs

Diagnostics and Additional Interfaces

  • FMU Debug Port
  • IO Debug Port
  • AD and IO Port
  • Configuration switches for USB and eMMC functions

Supported Software

The board can be used in systems based on PX4 and ArduPilot software. For PX4, version 1.13.1 Stable or newer is required.

The Raspberry Pi can run applications as a companion computer, communicating with the autopilot via MAVLink, among other protocols. This allows for functions not handled directly by the flight controller, such as image analysis, integration of additional sensors, or advanced mission planning.
