The arena brand was created in 1973 by the son of a sports visionary, Horst Dasler. During the Summer Games in Munich in 1972 Dassler was at the pool when Mark Spitz won his historic 7 gold medals. In 1973, the Arena brand introduced the first swimwear line. The key to the success of the brand was signing individual contracts with athletes for the Summer Olympic Games 1976 in Montreal. Sponsored athletes include Mark Spitz, Novella Calligaris, Steve Furniss, David Wilke, Shirley Babashoff, Gary Hall, Klaus Dibiasi and Ulrika Knape.
