The closure of vitamin C into liposome molecules results in its greater bioavailability and stability. WHAT IS VITAMIN C USED FOR?

Vitamin C, commonly known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient. The human body needs vitamin C for various basic functions, and the key one is the proper functioning of the immune system.

Vitamin C also plays an important role in collagen production, nervous system function, protection against oxidative stress and energy metabolism.

Most animals can produce their own vitamin C. Unfortunately, humans do not have this option. For this reason, it is so important to take the right dose of vitamin C in our diet.

Vitamin C, like many other essential nutrients, is water-soluble. This makes its absorption in cells a challenge.

Our cells are covered with a membrane that allows nutrients to penetrate inside. However, this membrane is mainly composed of fats and only a small amount of water-soluble fats pass into the cell1.

WHAT ARE LIPOSOMES?

Liposomes are vesicles consisting of fluid and lipid bilayer. They are the best intercellular transporters because they are composed of the same lipids that make up cell membranes2.

The cell membrane in the human body functions in such a way as to pass certain components into the cell and retain others. Since it consists of a lipid bilayer, the placement of fat-soluble nutrients in it may be more easily achievable3.

Liposomes have become a breakthrough discovery as they have helped increase the bioavailability of water-soluble nutrients. In this case, the lipid bilayer surrounds the water-soluble nutrient4.

WHAT DOES “BIOAVAILABILITY” MEAN?

When nutrients are absorbed into cells, they only pass a part of them. The rest can be stored by the body for later use or is excreted. The percentage of nutrient absorbed is its bioavailability5.

WHAT IS LIPOSOMAL VITAMIN C?

Liposomes can be made from popular fats such as sunflower oil. They have been used as an effective method of administering drugs and nutrients since the 70s of the twentieth century. More specifically, liposomes are phospholipids – compounds related to lipids that make up our cell membranes6.

In the case of dietary supplements with liposomal vitamin C, the liposomal encapsulation process retains vitamin C in microscopic phospholipid balls.

HOW IS LIPOSOMAL VITAMIN C DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR VITAMIN C?

In two studies from 2016 and 2019, researchers noted an increased bioavailability of vitamin C (measured by plasma concentrations) when it was encapsulated in liposomes, compared to the unencapsulated form7,8. Another 2019 study found that white blood cells absorbed about 50% more vitamin C from a liposomal product than from a traditional supplement9.

In addition to increased absorption, liposomal vitamin C has no unique advantages over other forms. Like regular vitamin C, it can help fight oxidative stress, boost immune function, improve collagen production, increase iron absorption, and support overall nervous system health. But with better bioavailability, its effects may be more effective than with the traditional form of vitamin C.
