PRO-VET® HyperSen makes this reason useful in the treatment of various dog diseases. Food hypersensitivity and atopy often co-occur in cats, and it is difficult to definitively distinguish between the two diseases. PRO-VET® HyperSen enables the treatment of both patients with food hypersensitivity and atopy.

Dividing proteins into smaller peptide fragments reduces their antigenicity. This rule also applies to cats with food hypersensitivity. In cats hypersensitive to soy protein, itching occurred after ingestion of intact protein, but did not occur after ingestion of hydrolyzed soy protein.

PRO-VET® HyperSen is a hypoallergenic diet containing hydrolyzed proteins that have been used as an elimination diet. Until now, elimination diets with hydrolyzed and parent proteins have not been directly compared, but based on data on elimination diets with intact and hydrolyzed proteins, it can be suggested that hypoallergenic diets such as PRO-VET® HyperSen with hydrolyzed proteins are more effective than those with intact proteins in treatment.

Atopy and food hypersensitivity often go hand in hand and have similar clinical symptoms, but skin disorders caused by inhaled allergens will not respond to hypoallergenic protein sources. Treatment of atopic dermatitis involves the suppression of chronic inflammatory reactions in the skin. PRO-VET® HyperSen contains eicosanoids formed from di-homo-gamma-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), so that PRO-VET® HyperSen has anti-inflammatory properties.

Double-blind, placebo-controlled experiments in cats with atopic dermatitis have shown that supplements of both borage oil, which is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and fish oil, which is rich in EPA, reduce the severity of itching, erythema, and self-injuries. Good results were obtained with a diet rich in both fish oil and borage oil. PRO-VET® HyperSen contains approximately 0,5% borage oil and 5% fish oil. The effectiveness of PRO-VET® HyperSen was tested in four clinics using a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. After 10 weeks of dietary use, the results for pruritus and erythema decreased by about half, while control treatment had no effect. According to the owners, the diet improved the condition of the skin in 60% of cats. It is clear that a significant number of patients with atopic dermatitis will improve after administration of PRO-VET® HyperSen enriched with adequate amounts of fish oil and borage oil. However, there will be big differences in individual response.

In cats with idiopathic chronic enteritis or inflammatory bowel disease, feeding a hypoallergenic diet such as PRO-VET® HyperSen based on a hydrolyzed protein source resulted in a significant reduction in clinical symptoms. It can be expected that the consumption of fish oil will further improve the clinical condition due to its anti-inflammatory effect. In people with ulcerative colitis, such a positive effect has been shown.
