What is folic acid?

Folic acid (vitamin B9) is an essential nutrient that plays a key role in many processes in the body. It occurs naturally in food in the form of folates, while in dietary supplements synthetic folic acid or its active form is often used – L-5-MTHF-Ca (methylated calcium folate), which is better absorbed by the body.

Where does folic acid naturally occur?

L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium (L-5-MTHF-Ca) is a calcium salt of L-5-methyltetrahydropholic acid (L-5-MTHF), which is the dominant folic acid found naturally in foods. It is synthesized by reducing folic acid to tetrahydropholic acid followed by methylation and diastereoselective crystallization (in water) of L-5-MTHF in the form of calcium salt.
