How to choose a bicycle inner tube?
Here are some simple steps to get the parameters you need!
The cyclist chooses an inner tube for the bike depending on:
- wheel size, described on the side of the tyre;
- section of the tyre, described on the side of the tyre;
- type of valve (e.g. Presta or Shrader), depending on the size of the hole in the rim of the wheel;
- the length of the valve, depending on the height of the rim.
What do you need to know about the inner tube you are looking for?
1. Tube size
Not only is the diameter of the wheel to which we want to apply a specific inner tube important, but also the width of the tire is very important. The inner tube designed for a narrow tyre will not fill wider enough and will therefore be more likely to puncture. In turn, too large inner tube in a narrow tire can not be well arranged and properly inflated.
2. Type of valve
The rims have a hole adapted to two sizes of valve diameters: 6 or 8 mm. Below we list the types of valves on the market.
3. Valve length
Higher profile rims and "aero" rims require longer (48 - 60 mm) valves. Normal valve with a length of approx. 35 mm can prevent the wheel from being inflated and the valve is secured.
Types of valves (valves):
- AV - Ø 8 mm - the most popular valve used in inner tubes for mountain bikes. Length: 35 - 48 mm. Other names: thick, car, Shrader, GP-3;
- American AV - Ø 8 - 16 mm - differs from Shrader valves by the lack of thread on the outside of the valve. Length: 32, 34 and 45 mm. Other names: Shrader American;
- DV - Ø 8 mm - valve used in children's bicycles, in Poland we remember them from Wigry series bikes, etc. Length: 32 mm (DV) and 40 mm (DV long). Other names: Dunlop, GP-1, Valve Blitz, Wood, EV;
- RV - Ø 6 mm - valve used in bicycles of Italian origin. The disadvantage of this system is the inability to replace the valve itself in the body. Length: 40 mm. Other names: Regina, Italian;
- SV - Ø 6 mm - a very popular valve used in inner tubes of road, trekking and mountain bikes. Length: 36 mm (SV) and 55 mm (SV long).
